NCP candidate Gilbert Mendonca has emerged victorious in the Mira-Bhayandar assembly constituency with a margin of over 10,000 votes. With this win, Mendonca has paved the way for his party’s entry into the Mira-Bhayandar segment.

There was a triangular contest in the constituency between Mendonca (NCP), Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) mayor Narendra Mehta (BJP) and Chandrakant Vaiti (MNS). Out of the 1,47,584 votes cast, Mendonca got 62,013, while Mehta secured 51,407. Vaiti dented the prospects of the BJP-SS alliance by netting 27,220 votes.

Mendonca was declared the winner with a margin of 10,606 votes.

Relocation of the dumping ground to a hill at Uttan-Dhavagi was a burning issue here in the polls. Angry villagers in Uttan declared that no candidate would be allowed to enter the area for electioneering. As a result, with the sole exception of Mendonca, who has made Uttan his stronghold, no candidate dared to canvas there. “My priority will be to solve the issue of the dumping ground in Uttan,” said Mendonca.
