MBBS student loses life in bike accident in Mumbai

A steep turn on the JJ flyover proved fatal for a 19-year-old speeding biker on Tuesday. Shashank Kumar, a first-year MBBS student of the Grant Medical College, died in the accident, while his friend, Nishant Gupta, who was riding pillion, suffered minor abrasions.

According to police, the accident took place around 1.15pm when Kumar and Gupta were returning to the college campus after sending a post from the General Post Office at CST.
Kumar, who hailed from Lucknow, was riding a Hero Honda he had borrowed from his friend. He lost control of the bike while taking a turn on the flyover.

“Kumar was thrown away on the other side of the flyover and rammed into a taxi going towards CST,” sub-inspector Ashok Ugle of the Pydhoni police station said, adding that Kumar was speeding and he was not wearing a helmet.

The taxi driver, Shabbir Ahmed, immediately applied the brakes, but by then Kumar had suffered severe injuries on his chest and head. “The biker rammed into the taxi with such force that the bumper was damaged and the taxi stopped working,” said Ahmed.

The police rushed Kumar and Gupta to the GT Hospital. “They were admitted to the hospital around 1.30pm. Kumar succumbed to the injuries within an hour,” said Dr Jitendra Sankpal, head of surgery, GT Hospital.

Gupta, also a first year medical student from GMC, suffered minor injuries and was later shifted to the JJ Hospital. Gupta hails from Agra.

Their parents have been informed and Kumar’s parents are on their way to Mumbai.
