A 40-year-old was stabbed to death with a knife and chopper by two people to settle old scores. Mahadeo Sawant was attacked in front of his wife, children and his elder brother in Lower Parel on Monday night.

“The accused - Sachin Pokhare alias Pappi and Naresh Rathod alias Harya managed to escape after killing Sawant. A man hunt has been launched to nab them, “said a police officer of NM Joshi Marg police station.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Mahadeo had beaten up Rathod in 2003 and the NM Joshi marg police registered a case against Sawant.

To take revenge, Rathod with the help of his associate Pokhare might have killed Mahadeo, pointed out the police officer.

Mangesh Sawant, 60, a resident of Lower Parel, came to meet his younger brother Sawant at the latter’s resident at Manik co-operative Housing society in Lower Parel. Mangesh was waiting outside the building for his younger brother and his family to arrive.

At that time, Sawant arrived in a taxi with his wife and two children after attending a Gudi Padwa function at his friend’s house in Central Mumbai.

He then crossed the road to go to a shop to buy something and Pokhare and Rathod assaulted him with a knife and chopper. Sawant screamed for help but the two killers managed to escape from the spot.

Injured Mahadeo was rushed to the KEM hospital by his brother and other residents of his colony.

But he was declared dead before admission by the doctors at the hospital, added police officer.
