Man, mother get life term in dowry death case

The court of additional sessions judge, WK Sagale, on Friday sentenced a man and his mother to life imprisonment for killing his wife by setting her on fire over dowry. The convicts have been identified as Pravin Tukaram Pawar (28) and Ambubai Pawar (45) of Vadarwadi.

According to additional public prosecutor, Shivajirao Patil, the victim, Poonam (19), got married to Pravin on May 7, 2009. But just 15 days after their marriage, Pravin started harassing her for dowry. Initially, Poonam’s parents gave in to Pravin and his mother’s demands, and gave them Rs30,000.

But in August, the mother-son duo started asking for Rs40,000 as dowry and started torturing Poonam physically and mentally.

Pravin also threatened to divorce her, if she did not give the dowry. After a few days, Pravin demanded Rs2 lakh from Poonam’s parents, but when her family could not collect the amount, Pravin and his mother poured kerosene on Poonam and set her on fire.

Jawan in police custody for ‘rape’
A dismissed jawan of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) was remanded in three-day police custody by a city court on Friday for allegedly raping a 24-year-old woman on false promise of marriage.

The arrested suspect, Vicky Bapurao Bhise (23), of
Bhavani Peth was arrested by the Samarth police after the victim filed a complaint in this regard.  According to the police, Bhise established sexual relations with the woman in December 2009 on false promise of marriage.

He was suspended from the SRPF for misbehaviour with senior officers. He has been charged under Sections 420, 467, 468 (for cheating and forgery) and 376 (for rape) of the IPC, 1860.

Gardener kills wife over money 
A gardener, Shivpujan Harishankar Yadav (28) was remanded in four-day police custody on Saturday for  allegedly strangulating his wife Terasee (28) to death during a fight over money in the outhouse of a bungalow located on East Street in Camp, Pune. 

The Cantonment police on Friday arrested Yadav under the relevant sections of the IPC, 1860. 

Senior police inspector Sushma Chavan of Cantonment police station said, “The couple had a fight over money. Shivpujan thought that his wife was sending some money to her parents in their village, and strangulated her with the help of a wire in front of their children.”

Man held for rearing peahen
A man was arrested for rearing a peahen at his residence in Mohammadwadi in Kondhwa on Saturday. The suspect has been identified as Sarvan Narayanji Devdasi (35).

According to the police, “During an inspection in Mohammadwadi area the police got a tip-off that the suspect illegally possessed a peahen, which is in violation of forest norms. Investigations are underway.”
