Man arrested in Ahmednagar following wife's death

Rajur police in Ahmednagar district have arrested Hemant Gaikwad, the son of a local Shiv Sena leader, in connection with his wife's alleged murder.

Hemant was arrested late last night, in Nashik Road area of town, and produced before court at Akole which remanded him to police custody for five days, police said.

Hemant's wife, Varsha, was killed on February 13 near Bhandardara dam. Police had earlier arrested two of his friends, Pranav Aher and Pritam Jadhav, in this connection.

Hemant, his friends and Varsha had gone to Bhandardara for a picnic last week. According to Hemant, she fell into ravine while clicking a picture near Randhava waterfalls and died.

But her father, Shashikant Gadhe, filed a complaint saying that he suspected foul play as Gaikwad family had been harassing Varsha for bringing money.

Hemant's father, Datta Gaikwad, was once Nashik district president of Shiv Sena.

Further probe is on, police said.
