A 53-year-old man from Worli died of malaria on Wednesday, and a 27-year-old pregnant woman from Kurla succumbed to swine flu on Tuesday. With this, the total number of malaria deaths in the city reached 15 this month, while the woman was the ninth victim of swine flu in July.

Over 142 patients were admitted to civic hospitals for malaria on Wednesday. At least 23 patients have succumbed to various rain-related ailments in July. The latest victim from Worli was hospitalised on Sunday.

The increasing number of rain-related illness too increased the number of visitors to hospitals. In the past 24 hours, civic and private hospitals in the city have registered 313 cases of fever, 78 cases of gastroenteritis, one case of leptospirosis and three of dengue.

On the other hand, the pregnant woman, who died of swine flu on Tuesday, had lost her baby two days ago in her womb after she was administered Tamiflu. She had been suffering from high fever before being admitted to a private nursing home in Ghatkopar on July 14.

“She was put on Tamiflu the next day,” Dr Guirish Ambe, executive health officer, BMC, said, adding that the swine flu medication and the baby’s death were not related.

“The woman, a resident of Ahmed Nagar in Kurla had developed extensive pneumonia of both lungs, which were filled with fluid. Her baby’s death has nothing to do with the Tamiflu treatment,” said Ambe.
