After the state election commission on Tuesday declared February 16 as the date for elections to municipal corporation across the state, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) election cell announced that the civic body will set up 3,200 polling booths.

On January 12, the draft of the voters’ list will be declared and the PMC will seek suggestions and objections. The final voters’ list will be declared on January 23. Candidates can file their nominations between January 24 and 31.

The scrutiny of applications will be done on February 1 and the same day the list of candidates will be declared. The candidates can withdraw their nominations by February 3. Distribution of election symbols will be done on February 4, and the final list of candidates will be declared the same day.

Voting will take place on February 16 (Thursday), between 7.30 am and 5.30 pm.

PMC officials said it has not yet been decided whether counting of votes will be done on the day of voting or the
next day.

Head of the election cell, Pravin Ashtikar said, “Our staff is all set for the elections and we are ready for counting of the votes the same day. However, a final decision on whether the counting should be held the same day or the next has not yet taken. The PMC commissioner will speak to the state election commissioner to decide on the date.”

The PMC has set up eight cells, including one that will monitor the model code of conduct. A total of 3,200 polling booths will be set up in the PMC limits, with each booth catering to 800 voters.

“We are going to open polling booths in schools, colleges, religious places, housing societies, club houses and, if needed, we will ask malls to provide a place for them. All these booths will be on the ground floor. Only where there is a lift we will set up booths on the second floor,” Ashtikar said.

According to the voters’ list available on October 1, 2011, there are 24,76,700 voters in PMC limits. Ashtikar said, “On January 5, we will get the revised voters list which will give us the exact numbers.”

Elections in nine other municipal corporations — Thane, Ulhasnagar, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nashik, Solapur, Akola, Amravati and Nagpur — will also be held on February 16 while the state’s district councils (zilla parishads) will go to polls on February 7.
