Maharashtra government today ordered a survey to ascertain the damage caused due to the recent unseasonal rains in various parts of the state.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, who took charge last week, directed his ministers to supervise the survey in their respective districts and submit a report before the cabinet in its meeting next week.

Addressing a press conference after the first meeting of his new cabinet here, he said the meet took stock of the crop situation in the state.

"After the ministers submit their report, a detailed discussion would take place in the next cabinet meeting on November 24 to finalise the steps to be taken for compensation and relief," Chavan said.

Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar was also present.

The chief minister said the winter session of the state legislature would begin in Nagpur from December 1 as scheduled. He also held a discussion on development package for Vidarbha with his Cabinet colleagues.

The CM has given directives to set up a special monitoring cell to review and expedite implementation of the development packages for all the four regions - Vidarbha, Marathwada, Konkan and North Maharashtra - announced by the previous Ashok Chavan Government.

"A review would take place every month to discuss if physical targets are being achieved and whether there is slackness in implementation. Similarly, it would be ascertained if budgetary allocation was reaching the ground level," Chavan said.

While prioritising project implementation, a "snapshot" would be prepared and the information posted on the government website, the chief minister said.

"I have instructed officials concerned to visit places in Vidarbha where there are issues of land acquisition for big projects and report to me before the next Cabinet meeting."

Chavan said ministers in-charge of district will be appointed soon. The CM said he expected his Ministers to work for welfare of the people and the state's development. "People expect change and have high expectations from the government."

The chief minister said both he and his deputy Ajit Pawar had decided to interact with the media after the weekly Cabinet meet.

"However, it is up to you (media) to decide how long this practice would last."

Chavan noted that the practice of post-Cabinet press briefing had stopped since interactions were not restricted just to the decisions taken at the meeting.

"Discipline has to be maintained," he said and declined to reply to questions in languages other than Marathi.
