Serious efforts are being made to bring the Peddar Road flyover project back on track. Getting environment clearance is on top of the priority list for the state government.

Public works department (public undertaking) minister Jaydutt Kshirsagar said the Centre had given in-principal permission during a meeting held last week in New Delhi.

Kshirsagar said minister of state for environment and forest, Jairam Ramesh, agreed to give the environmental nod to the 4.6km long flyover. “During our meeting, we discussed all the major projects with the minister,” Kshirsagar said. “Keeping the city’s traffic situation in mind, we convinced him that the Peddar Road flyover be given the clearance soon. Ramesh said he would take up the proposal in the environment committee’s monthly meeting which will be held in August.”

A delegation led by chief minister Ashok Chavan met Ramesh to discuss various infrastructure issues that are awaiting environmental clearance. Kshirsagar, who is also the chief of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), was part of the delegation.

Kshirsagar said the environment ministry had apprehensions about the petitions made by residents and environmentalists in the court. “There is no violation of any environment norms and we have assured the ministry about it,” he said. “We asked the ministry not to wait for the court verdict as the petitions would take their own course.”

Kshirsagar said there were at least 10 petitions pending against the project.

According to Kshirsagar, MSRDC is all set to start work as soon as it gets the nod from the ministry. “From DPR to the environment study report, we are ready to kickoff the project, which will be completed in two years from the commencement. It is time work started on the flyover. Apart from the rise in traffic, the Worli-Haji Ali sea link will create a bottleneck if the flyover option is not given on time, “ he said.
