A recent proposal from the office of Maharashtra Director General of Police to the state home department has angered the policemen working in the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF).

The policemen working in the SRPF have to serve a minimum of 10 years in the department before getting a posting in the police stations, but the proposal states that the period should be increased to 15 years now.

The SRPF are called in at the time of rioting, huge public or political rallies and emergency situations to maintain law and order. Even in the Naxalite-affected areas, SRPF has the responsibility of bandobast. Around 10,000 policemen, trained to use advanced weaponry, are working in the SRPF across state.

“Due to the nature of their work, they have to stay away from their families for months. If there is an emergency situation, SRPF jawans are posted at the affected places till the crisis is over. Since they are directly selected in the SRPF, they have to serve a minimum of 10 years, before they can apply for a transfer,” said a police officer.

Every year around 10% of the policemen from SRPF get transferred. This has resulted in vacancies in the SRPF, hence, the reason for the proposal mooted by the office of the DGP, according to sources.

“The process of getting a new posting is so slow that it takes four years to get posted elsewhere after the tenure. If the tenure is increased to 15 years, then the process will be delayed further. We will request the authorities to consider our plight before sanctioning this proposal,” said a SRPF constable.
