The state’s home department is planning to set up a three-tier closed-circuit television (CCTV) control room system in Mumbai. While each police station will be able to operate the cameras in their jurisdiction, the regional control room will be able to do the same for the whole city. The main control room will be able to choose any camera’s footage at the click of a button.

“An additional commissioner of police was assigned the task of finalising the locations, where the first 1,200 CCTV cameras can be installed in Mumbai and more or less the locations have been finalised. After the technical and financial bidding, the lowest bidder would be given the tender. The said company will be responsible for the camera feeds, drawing connectivity,  establishing control rooms and running the system for five years,” said UC Sarangi, additional chief secretary, home department.

“CCTVs will reduce the patrolling work of the police. It will also help in event management and would also be a great help in cases of vandalism and crime,” Sarangi said, adding that a meeting of the technical committee for CCTV is scheduled this week.

Explaining the CCTV control system, Sarangi said that it would be a three-tier system. “Every police station will be able to see the footage of CCTVs installed in their jurisdiction. Regional control rooms will be able to view footage from their region. Since the police main control room could not have a huge video wall, where view from each CCTV could be monitored, there would be a system, where with the click of one button the desired footage can be viewed,” he said.

The department is contemplating a CCTV cadre, comprising technically trained staff to monitor the CCTV feeds.
