The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the agency that built city’s longest flyover in Lalbaug, had promised commuters that it will ensure the commute between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Sion can be made in just 25minutes from Monday.

However, thanks to fashionably late netas and a sprawling tent built for the inauguration function which occupied a large part of the down lane of the flyover, commuters took hours and not minutes to drive past the stretch. Also, the launch event of the flyover only added to the congestion and inconvenience for the motorists commuting on the BA Ambedkar road due to the traffic arrangements; they could also could not use the flyover during the crucial peak hours when it was supposed to bring them relief as chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, who was scheduled to inaugurate the flyover at 4 pm, arrived only around 8 pm.

While Chavan was gracious enough to offer feeble apologies, other politicians present for the launch did not bother to do even that. Apparently, they had far too important issues such as housing redevelopment; lack of any new project being announced by the MMRDA in BMC’s limits; congestion in other parts of the city-among other things-to talk about at the launch event. No one bothered to apologise for the delay or make their official address brief enough so that the flyover could be opened quickly for motorists.

After all the official events concluded, it was 9pm and eager motorists at one end of the flyover were dissapointed as the flyover was opened only partially, towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The down road, which saw much more traffic, took some time to open to traffic as the tent installed on the flyover consumed a lot of space and thus the process of dismantling took time.
