A pillion rider was killed instantly and a motorcyclist injured when a bike on which they were travelling, skidded at the Lalbaug flyover on Monday afternoon.

“The deceased, identified as Gautam Wavale, 21, and the injured, identified as Aliz Sheikh, 23, were both from Bhandup,” said senior police inspector Suresh Jain of Kala Chowky police station. Sheikh, whose left hand was broken, is undergoing treatment at JJ Hospital, added the police officer.

The incident took place at 2.15pm on Monday, when the duo was on their way to Haji Ali Dargha at Tardeo on the eve of Bakri Eid. Sheikh was riding his Bajaj Pulsar (MH-04-DA-7274) with Wavale seated behind him.

The police said that when the bike reached the middle of the Lalbaug flyover, it skidded suddenly. The impact of the accident was so severe that Wavale’s head hit the road divider, while Sheikh’s broke his left hand. The bike was also damaged. The police rushed both of them to the JJ Hospital where Wavale was declared dead on arrival.

Jain said that Wavale’s body was handed over to his father after the post-mortem.
