The state government has approved a special water supply scheme for Kolhapur under which water will be supplied directly to Kolhapur from Kalammawadi dam in Radhanagari taluka.

The project cost is estimated at Rs392 crore.  While 50% of it would be borne by the state government, the Suvarna Jayanti Nagarothan Mahabhiyan will provide a soft loan to the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) to bear the remaining cost of the project.

Presently, the administration draws water from Panchganga River and supplies it to the city after treatment.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress had promised to launch this scheme in the civic polls last year. The scheme was approved by deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar at a recent meeting held in Mumbai.

He promised Rs50 crore for the project. The meeting was attended by Mushrif, Patil and KMC commissioner, Vijay Singhal, among others.

Singhal told DNA, “This scheme requires only Rs10 crore for electricity expenses,” Singhal said. Two tunnels will be laid from the dam up to Haladi village near the city. The scheme has been designed considering the city’s water requirement of 238 million litres daily (MLD) in 2045, as against the present need of 120 MLD.
