The Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Government Medical College, Kolhapur, has initiated stringent action against three doctors and head of a department for their alleged negligence during chief minister Prithviraj Chavan’s two-day visit to Kolhapur last week.

The medical college has proposed the suspension of lecturer of medicine, Dr Girish Patil, who did not join the medical team in the CM’s convoy, as is the protocol.

As per the norms, government medical colleges put associate professors or the lecturers of surgery, medicine and anesthesia on duty in the chief minister’s convoy. It is mandatory for them to accompany the CM’s convoy.

Show-cause notices have been issued to Dr Sangeeta Nimbalkar and Dr Anushka Waikar for failing to join the convoy in time with their medical team, and to the medicine department head, Dr MB Wadikhaye, for leaving the headquarters during Chavan’s visit to the district on March 11 and 12.

“We have observed very serious negligence by a few doctors,” said the college dean, MP Parchand.

On March 11, the college had designated surgery department lecturer Nimbalkar, medicine department lecturer Waikar and anesthesia lecturer, Dr Hemlata Patil, to be part of the convoy.

However, Waikar and Nimbalkar sent resident doctors in their place. “My officers noted their absence and informed me, so we immediately contacted them. Nimbalkar and Waikar joined the convoy later after a communication from their seniors,” Parchand said.

On March 12, Drs Girish Patil, Sarang Dhavale and Maruti Patil were to attend to the convoy. Parchand was at the government rest house for a meeting with the CM when he noticed that Girish Patil was not in the ambulance parked outside. He arranged for another doctor in his place.

When asked to clarify the lapse, Patil said he was busy tackling the “rush of patients at the college hospital”.

“The proposal for Girish Patil’s suspension has been forwarded to the directorate of medical education and research on March 12,”
Parchand said.

The college has appointed a three-member committee for looking into the matter, which is expected by Friday.
