Despite prohibitory orders by the authorities, residents of the villages close to Jaitapur, the site of the proposed nuclear power plant in coastal Ratnagiri, today held a condolence meeting for victims of earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Local people are opposed to the nuclear project coming up at Jaitapur.

Nearly 200 people from Mithagavne, Madban, Karel and other nearby villages assembled at Anjeshwar Temple at Mithagavne for the meeting, though the letter granting permission for it came a bit later, said Milind Desai, a leading anti-plant activist.

Janahit Seva Samiti, an NGO, had organised the meet, despite the prohibitory orders clamped in the area from yesterday to April 5.
