The crime branch, which is probing the murder of investigative journalist J Dey, said it has intercepted the courier sent by Dey to Delhi on the day of the incident. It was brought to the city on Monday night and may provide clues about his assailants. The police have also not ruled out the possibility of questioning a few policemen for their role.

Police sources said that Dey is believed to have couriered some documents to the marketing manager of the Philippines tourism department.

A senior police official involved in the investigation said, “We are recapping Dey’s movements in the couple of days before he was shot dead.”

The officials said that more than 80 police officials are working on the case. Teams have been sent to different places in the country to investigate from all possible angles, including the murder being carried out by the diesel mafia, against whom Dey had written some biting articles recently.

Another senior official said that the police will be filing a plea in the court for permission to question diesel mafia kingpin Mohammed Ali, who was arrested last year for murdering a rival.

In another important development, the police questioned a businessman whom the scribe was reportedly on his way to meet near a restaurant in Powai. The businessman is believed to be among those who called Dey moments after he was shot dead on Saturday.

The police have so far not found anything suspicious about the businessman, who reportedly told interrogators that he was waiting for Dey at a restaurant some distance from the crime spot. He added he had no idea Dey had been fired upon and therefore made the calls. After they went unanswered a couple of times, he went back thinking Dey will not be coming for the meeting. Though the businessman was allowed to go home, the cops have directed him not to leave the city.

Dey’s colleague and Mid Day journalist Tarakant Dwivedi aka Akela said: “In 2007, the Anti-Corruption Bureau had given a report to the police commissioner that an officer who was then serving in the crime branch had close relations with fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena Parker, and we had got access to it. A fortnight ago, Dey had emailed the report to police chief Arup Patnaik and had sought a comment or inquiry into the issue. Dey’s killing suggests that this officer has either direct or indirect role to play. It is a known fact that the underworld doesn’t kill a journalist, hence it is highly possible that it has been used by someone for personal benefit.”
