This Sunday all roads will certainly lead away from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, as runners, the fitness oriented, charity-conscious, young and don their jerseys and keds for the city’s annual marathon. Said to be one of the richest marathons in Asia, the marathon will offer an enhanced prize purse of $3,25,000, an increase of $15,000 over what was on offer last year. And for city folks it’s the spirit that it carries that’s going to get them there early, this Sunday morning…

‘One feels supercharged’
While actor Cyrus Sahukar absolutely loves the fact that everyone is out on the streets, actor Rahul Bose says, “The marathon is the only truly non discriminatory, mass public event in the history of India. On that day all barriers of income, cast, colour and creed vanish. As the children of The Foundation (my NGO) will be participating I will be running the dream run with them.”

Actress Gul Panag who’s also a regular participant at marathons says, “This year too, I will be running 21km. The motivation is spirit of achievement that comes after finishing such a long distance run. One feels strong, invincible and supercharged. And the energy of thousands of positively charged people around makes the high even better,” she says.

Businessman Riyhad Kundanmal is gung-ho over the event. “I will certainly be part of it. I think it’s one day in the year that all the flow of human traffic actually moves in the same orderly direction. It’s also nice as it creates awareness that exercise is fun and not just for health reasons.”

Corporate dash
Actors and the rest of society apart, much looked forward-to participants also emerge from corporate-ville. Biz head honchos Anand Mahindra and Niranjan Hiranandani are previous participants, so is Anil Ambani. Sanjay Dalal (son of food author Tarla Dalal), who has already done close to 15 marathons globally and is part of Anil Ambani’s running coterie, says, “The marathon is like a goal for us and Anil will be doing the 21 km run. He has been training for it as usual.”
