Sandra Samuel, the nanny who braved terror and rushed to save wailing baby Moshe when his parents were shot dead during the 26/11 attack, has been given temporary Israeli citizenship.

The Chabad.org News and Israeli news site COLlive.com stated that Samuel has been given temporary residential status. Chabad.org News carries news and other information related to Chabad activities that Moshe’s parents ran in Mumbai.

Chabad.org News stated that interior minister Eli Yishai decided to confer citizenship upon Samuel — a native of India — in recognition of her heroism. “This is a humanitarian move necessary for anyone who saves a Jewish life,” Yishai was quoted as saying in COLlive.com

The citizenship process began with an appeal by the Holtzbergs, Moshe’s maternal relatives, to the interior ministry. The family had asked that Samuel be allowed to remain in Israel in order to continue caring for Moshe.

Samuel was working as a nanny to the child when Rabbi Gavriel and his wife Rivka Holtzberg ran the Chabad services from Nariman House. A widow, she has two sons in Mumbai.

When the terrorists killed Moshe’s parents, along with four other Jewish guests, Samuel, who was hiding in a lower kitchen, rescued the kid when she heard him cry.

Moshe Holtzberg, Moshe’s uncle who is in Mumbai, said: “This is great news for us. The fact that Israel has considered this, is very good news. She deserves it. After saving the baby, she had said that she would be with him all the time. Bestowing of residential status does not take her off India. It is an added benefit she gets. When the child grows up, she can come back to India if she feels like. The Holtzberg family is also trying to make extensive efforts to rebuild the Nariman House. We are facing some difficulties, but we will rebuild it.”
