Social media is proving to be a tool not just used by citizens to rail against the administration, but is also increasingly finding favour with government officials who want to express discontent with the treatment meted out to them.

A senior cop, who recently challenged his transfer, has posted a comment on his Facebook profile which smacks of dissatisfaction with his frequent transfers. More importantly, the status update has got around 200 ‘comments’ and ‘likes’ within two days of being posted.

The post by Rajkumar Vhatkar, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, reads, ‘Dear friends, I am now superintendent of police [SP], Aurangabad (rural). It’s my third posting in three months. First SP Nanded, then deputy commissioner of police, Mumbai (Zone 6), and now SP Aurangabad.”

Vhatkar was posted as DCP (operations) in Mumbai until three months ago, when he was transferred to Nanded as SP. Sources say that just as he was about to take charge, he was transferred back to the city as DCP (Zone 6). However, Vhatkar did not take the charge and instead decided to challenge the transfer by approaching a central appellate body that looks into administrative and transfer related issues. The latest development is that he has now been transferred to Aurangabad as SP (rural).

Sources in police echelons are of the view that frequent transfers without completion of the mandatory three years bear the imprint of administrative interference.

Vhatkar, a native of Paltan district, is a 1998 batch IPS officer. With a degree in management, he is considered to be an upright officer and was the spokesperson of Mumbai Police until recently.

The posts range from simple congratulatory messages to ones which point to the sorry state of affairs in government postings and transfers. Some of the comments are from state and central level government employees themselves. A senior defence official sympathised by writing, ‘To accommodate or displace others, we too get moved’. Another comment reads, ‘Jay ho! For the law of transfer’.
