While a large number of senior citizens are in the forefront of civic activism and running of mohalla committees, it is important to involve the youth with their energies and ideas, Satish Khot, president of the National Society for Clean Cities (NSCC) said.

Speaking at DNA’s ‘My Locality My Voice’ event, Khot said it was high time that the youth stepped in and took charge. “We have forgotten that in all the reforms the youth have been in the forefront, especially during the freedom struggle. Even today, we need to have the youth,” he said.

Khot also drew attention to a DNA city edit calling for greater participation from the youth in locality issues.

Commenting on poor garbage management across Pune, Khot said the PMC could implement double shifts for the garbage collection employees, if they cannot cover the entire city in one shift. “This will help promote cleanliness in the city,” he said.
He demanded that fines be imposed on people who do not segregate garbage. “This will bring in discipline and help the routine of segregating and disposal of garbage among citizens,” he said.

Increasing the voting percentage is another important aspect, said Khot. “Citizens should be involved in the mohalla committees and come out to vote with all other citizens of the locality to increase the voting percentage up to 75% at least,” he added.
