“Meeta Purshottam Padiar took her job seriously and was even trained to call defaulters and abuse them with the ugliest of swear words,” said senior inspector Vinayak Sawde of the Bandra-Kurla Complex police station.
Padiar's career as a paid abuser came to an end when she was arrested along with two others on charges of threatening and extorting money from Daljit Singh Matharoo, 47, owner of a luxury car showroom in Bandra.
Police officers said the reason a woman was hired for the role was because most people get embarrassed when abused by a woman.
“She was being used by the recovery agency to psychologically harass defaulters,” Sawde said.
Another officer involved with the investigation said the woman was paid a high salary for her work because her diatribe would almost always have a damaging effect on the psyche of the defaulters and many of them turned up to repay pending amounts.
The officers said Matharoo’s elder brother Kulwanth had defaulted on a personal loan of Rs6.5 lakh taken from a private bank.
Padiar, who had been calling Kulwanth for recovery, got the cellphone numbers of Matharoo and his college-going daughter and started harassing them too.
“The complainant and his daughter got scared by the threats and abuses and the matter was finally brought to the police’s
notice,” said sub-inspector A Patil.
Padiar was then arrested along with two others after the police traced them through the cellphone call records.
