Believe it or not, but the Shiv Sainiks are running for cover in Malvan. Those who unleashed a reign of terror with their strong-arm tactics are now seeking police protection. Demanding a more “democratic rule” in Malvan, Sainiks complain that they are being implicated in false cases by the police.

According to information with DNA, a number of Sainiks are seeking protection from private security agencies as they are not sure of getting police protection. They live in the constant dread of attacks by Narayan Rane supporters.

For a party synonymous with violence, the hoarse cries of being victims is a difficult pill to swallow. Demanding that the Sainiks be given round-the-clock protection as they fear for their lives, the party’s chief election agent and MLA Arvind Sawant said, “We do not have faith in the Malvan police. We do not think we will be protected.”

Disagreeing that it was the Shiv Sena which had sowed the seeds of violence, Sawant told DNA, “We too used violence. But it had always been against injustice and never for power.”

According to information, Sainiks are leaving Malvan for “safer” places elsewhere. Sawant disclosed that people — who once stood by the Sena — are now turning the Sainiks and party leaders away from their homes. “They request us not to visit their homes as they fear attacks from Rane supporters. The Sena had done so much for these people, but today we have no place to go,” he rued.

For over a decade, the Sena had indulged in similar tactics in Malvan and did not allow any other political party to establish a base there. Those who dared to side with any political party other than the Sena lived in fear for over a decade.

The Sena — a dictatorial party that is now demanding a democratic rule — will raise the issue of safety of its members in the forthcoming winter session of the Maharashtra Legislature. “The Congress is using muscle and money power. Who will listen to the Sainiks?” questioned Sawant.
