HSC exam failure kills student; depression, tuition teacher

In two separate incidents, an HSC student and a tuition teacher committed suicide in the Eastern suburbs this weekend.
A student of a Vidyavihar-based junior college who had recently appeared for the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations committed suicide at his residence in Gautam Nagar, Deonar on Saturday evening.

The deceased identified as Ajay Vilas Kolekar, 19, had failed in two subjects and was upset after the results were declared on Friday.

According to police, Kolekar’s father is a daily wage labourer. Kolekar wished to study and get a good job to support his family. On Saturday evening, Kolekar did not respond to his mother’s call. She went to his room to check on him and found Kolekar hanging from the ceiling fan. Kolekar’’s parents told police that he was upset after hearing about his dismal results, after it had been on Friday and it could be the reason for him taking the extreme step.

In another case, a 55-year-old tuition teacher from Ghatkopar committed suicide at his aunt’s residence in Shivaji Nagar on Saturday.

The deceased identified as Aftab Khurshid Ahmed Khan was visiting his aunt in Padma Nagar, Govandi. When his aunt and family returned home, they found Khan hanging from the ceiling.
Khan ran his tuition classes in Ghatkopar. He had married twice but both his wives had separated from him. The police said that he was suffering from depression and that may be the reason why he ended his life.
