Heavy rains: Western Maharashtra, Konkan region worst affected

Heavy rains, lashing parts of the state, specially the Konkan region and western Maharashtra have disrupted life, with several villages, being cut off due to rising river water levels.

In Konkan, the waters of Vasishthi and Jagbudi rivers reached Chiplun and Khed towns in Konkan and 70 villages have been cut off. Rivers like Savitri and Kundalika are flowing close to the danger mark.

Two persons drowned in Raigad district, one in a dam and another in a culvert.

Rains have so far claimed 7 lives in Sindhudurg district. Over 20 villages in Mangaon region are cut off.

In Sangli district of western Maharashtra, Krishna river waters have risen. The Panchaganga river near Kolhapur is flowing above the danger mark and 23 villages in the region have been cut off and 96 small roads are under water.

Mahabaleshwar in Satara district recorded 230mm and Koyna dam region recorded 200 mm rainfall in last 24 hours.

Heavy rains, particularly between Ratnagiri and Nivsar, led to disruption of train services on the Konkan Railway route, with water and slush accumulating on tracks at Pomendi between Ratnagiri and Nivsar section.

The Konkan Railway has announced cancellation of services till July 21.

The weather forecast said heavy to very heavy rainfall would break out at a few places with isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan region.
