Even as the election season kicks off with the State Election Commission (SEC) announcing the dates of the municipal corporation elections, the newly appointed leader of the Opposition in the Vidhan Parishad, Vinod Tawde, has questioned why the government’s cabinet meeting was suddenly held on Monday, January 2, instead of Wednesday, when the cabinet meeting is held every week.

“The state government held the cabinet meeting on Monday (January 2) and announced many schemes aimed at wooing the voters. While I have full faith in state election commissioner Neela Satyanarayan and (additional chief secretary, SEC) Chand Goel, the common man will become suspicious about whether the government had advance notice that the election dates were going to be announced,” Tawde said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said many thought that the SEC would announce the dates on Thursday, January 5, but the way the cabinet meeting was hurriedly called on Monday gave rise to the suspicion that the dates had been announced earlier.

Tawde also said the results of the district council elections, which are to be held on February 7, should not be announced till the municipal corporation polls are over to ensure free and fair elections.  “The SEC has said the district council polls results would be announced the next day. Any such announcement might affect the voters in the municipal corporation elections,” he said.

Tawde said he would meet Neela Satyanarayan to petition not to announce that the district council election results till February 16, the day of the municipal corporation polls.
