A doctor and her assistant were arrested by the sleuths of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday for demanding a bribe of Rs3 lakh from another doctor.

The doctor, Reshma Desai, is the nursing superintendent of the state, and also serves at St George Hospital, while Nilam Bansode is the assistant director (nursing) of health services.
According to ACB officials, the complainant is a doctor and also the president of the Shirodkar Hospital Trust in Dombivli (East). He had submitted a proposal to the Maharashtra Medical University
in Nashik to start a nursing course at the trust.

In November last year, Bansode met the complainant at the concerned hospital and allegedly demanded Rs3 lakh on behalf of Desai to forward the proposal to Maharashtra Medical University.  However, though the complainant paid Rs2 lakh to Desai through Bansode, his proposal was rejected on January 11, the ACB said.
When the complainant made enquiries with Bansode regarding the rejection, she advised him to make a revised application and allegedly asked him to cough up another Rs2 lakh. The complainant then lodged a complaint with the ACB.

Desai then allegedly reduced her demand to Rs1.5 lakh to make positive remarks on the revised application.

“A trap was laid at St George Hospital on Tuesday in which both Desai and Bansode were caught red-handed receiving a bribe of Rs1.5lakh from the victim,” said an ACB official, requesting anonymity.
