If the plush Bandra Kurla Complex is being projected as the next big business centre of Mumbai, for those taking the plush BKC in coming summer, utter chaos and risk of life awaits near the Bandra railway station. Thanks to the recent fire that destroyed a portion of the Foot Over Bridge (FoB) in Bandra, thousands of commuters are having a torrid time.

Umesh Gavit, professional who has to reach the sales tax office almost every alternate day in BKC fumes while battling the heaps of clay on his way out of the station premises. “This is a clear indication of the government’s apathy towards tax paying Mumbaikars. The bridge fell pray to fire, which we can understand.
However neither the railway administration nor the civic body nor the owners of the skywalk have bothered to construct a decent way out of the station premises. The present road is certainly inviting a few legs tobe fractured in the next few days,”said a visibly upset Gavit.

The journey becomes especially difficult for women, childdren and senior citizen. “My daughter comes back from her college around 8 pm every evening when there is absolutely no lighting system on the entire road. Since the fire on March 4, she often is too scared to walk in the area,” said a senior state government official staying the Bandra government colony.

The entire story began after a fire gripped a slum colony of Gareeb Nagar which is very close to the first skywalk in the city as well as the railway FoB. While the skywalk was partially damaged, the FoB’ attachment to the skywalk and the ticket office came crashing down as an impact of fire. While senior officials of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) have already said that the authority will be connecting the skywalk with a newly constructed portion of the FoB. When contacted, Sharad Chanwdrayan, the chief public relation officer of the west railways said that soon after the incident, the railway authorities constructed a road for commuters to make way out of the station.
