Gamdevi police launch manhunt for Chhota Rajan aide

Gamdevi police have launched a manhunt to arrest Chhota Rajan aide Sameer Manik, who has not appeared before the high court for the hearing of his case for the past one and half years, despite serving several notices to him from time to time.

Manik, 39, was booked under the stringent law of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) by the Gamdevi police in 2001 for his alleged involvement in gunning down Jaya Shetty, an owner of Hotel ‘Golden Crown’ at Nana Chowk in South Mumbai, on May 4, 2001, at his hotel at the behest of fugitive ganglord Chhota Rajan. 

Manik had allegedly demanded extortion amount of Rs50 lakh from Shetty several times. When Shetty refused to pay him the ransom, Manik allegedly had hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Shetty.   

Besides killing the high profile hotelier, Manik who was active since 1998 in crime world, was allegedly involved in several cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion and possession of lethal weapons and there are offenses registered against him at Bandra and Santa Cruz police stations.

He was also arrested by the Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) in 2005 for alleged possession of firearms. However, the special MCOCA court acquitted him on February 2, 2009.  

“The state government appealed in the high court against the judgment on February 24, 2009. The HC served him notices many a times, to appear before the court for hearing his case. “But, he was not available either at his Thakur Complex residence in Kandivli or in Goa,” said police inspector Kiran Kale of Gamdevi police station.   

Kale appealed to general public that if there is any information about Manik, they should intimate Sanjay Diwadkar, senior police inspector of Gamdevi police station on 23803505/ 23804505/100. The name of the informer will not be disclosed.
