National broadcaster Doordarshan today said a lot of focus was being given on entertainment oriented programmes to boost revenues and decrease dependence on government grants.

"Doordarshan, which completed 50 years of its existence yesterday, was trying to come up with good quality programmes keeping in view the changing tastes of its audiences," said DD General Aruna Sharma.

Addressing a press conference here, Sharma said a lot of focus was being given on entertainment oriented programmes to boost revenues and decrease dependence on government grants. Under a grant from UNESCO, Doordarshan was established in 1959 and operated from a makeshift studio in Akashwani Bhavan here.

Initially, only one transmitter was set up at Delhi which could transmit Doordarshan signals only up to 25km but today, after 50 years, Doordarshan has 1,416 transmitters spread across the country to reach out to masses.

Through these transmitters, its national channel, also known as DD-1, covers a geographical area of 79.4 per cent and reaches out to 91.4 per cent of country's population in terrestrial mode.

During these years, Doordarshan has built a network of 30 regional and satellite channels. It has 66 fully equipped production centres set up in each corner of the country and generates 1700 hours weekly programme output.

Family dramas of the past like Hum Log, Buniyad, mythological serials—Ramayana, Mahabharat, classics Wagle Ki Duniya, Malgudi Days, cultural magazine Surbhi, science programme Turning Point, historical Serials—Tipu Sultan, Bharat Ek Khoj, children's series Jungle Book and detective serial like Karamchand are still afresh in the minds of people decades after their broadcast.

These were instrumental in integrating masses and were depicting country's values and ethos. It is Doordarshan which projects India and has been a known platform to nurture India's talent since its inception, she said.
