The wait is over. The merit list for students aspiring for FYJC will be declared on Tuesday in all city colleges. Parents and students alike have been on tenterhooks since the submission of forms. To make matters worse, colleges are predicting high cut-off marks than last year.

“We applied in nine colleges for science with information technology. But when I inquired about the cut-offs for vocational subjects, they were as high as 92 percent. My son got 85 per cent in his SSC exam. But we are very doubtful about getting a seat in the first list,’’ said a worried parent, Maria Furtado.

Many principals said the cut-off this year for the first merit list would be 2-3 per cent higher than last year. “The number of students scoring 90 per cent and above has increased this year. Mostly, the cut-off for the first list will be around 88 for science and 86 for commerce,” said Kiran Mangaokar, principal, Mithibai College.

“I have secured 87.55 percent and desperately want to get into Ruia College. I have applied for science stream with Electronics,” said FYJC aspirant Ashish Kumar.

Another fact that worries parents is that most well-known colleges have only two or three merit lists. “Usually there is an average turnout of 20-25 per cent students taking admission after the first merit list.

As the students apply at more than two colleges, there would be a lot of cancellations too. So we usually have two merit lists at our college,” said Mangaokar.

But students who applied at the Jai Hind College can check out the first list on their website. “Students can access our first merit list online at our college website from Monday night onwards.

Students staying in the suburbs don’t have to come all the way to the campus,” said Kirti Narain, Principal, Jai Hindi College. This year, the increase in the number of students passing SSC exams had put pressure on popular colleges.

Colleges such as Sydenham, Jai Hind, Ruia, Podar, Ruparel sell at least 6,000 forms a year for limited seats. This year many colleges received more than that for their limited seats.
