Kalidas Kalamandir theatre in Nashik came alive in the afternoons. School children thronged the theatre to enjoy the short films on wildlife and environment at the international Vasundhara film festival, an initiative of Kirloskar and Club Vasundhara. The festival, which ended on Sunday was presented by Aksharyatra and Nashik Municipal Corporation.

There had been varied responses of children to these films, most of which have ben made by youngsters. They were startled to notice the ill-effects of passive smoking on babies. While they enjoyed seeing the film on Ganapati bappa and joined in the cheer of Ganapati bappa morya, they weeped to see the condition of the plaster of paris idols after immersion.

“This is not just a film festival, it’s a movement to preserve, protect and save the earth,” states festival director Virendra Chitrav.

This concept was first launched in Pune two years back with an overwhelming response. The idea was then to spread it all over the state. Vasundhara focuses on areas of environment, wildlife, energy, air and water.

“Youngsters are captivated by this medium and instead of trying to separate them from it, our effort is to use it for best results. Our experience has been that kids respond very well,” said Chitrav.

The festival was organised by Aksharyatra. It was opened on Thursday by felicitating Prasad Sevakari, an environmentalist, originally from Nashik and now working in the area of disaster management the world over.

Atul Dhamankar presented an audio-visual talk on trails of the tiger.

The four-day festival involved nature trails each morning, photography exhibition, short films, documentaries, talks, workshops, lectures, etc.

“This is an effort to bring all the persons and agencies working in this area on a common platform. Lot of people do lot of work and Vasundhara, which intends to be a continuous process, would like to coordinate the efforts so that concrete results can be achieved. The focus is of course on grooming the young to be sensitive to nature, enjoy it and protecting it,” states Sunil Kotwal, convenor, Aksharyatra.
