Fatal accident cases will henceforth be investigated by police officers of the rank of police sub-inspector (PSI) and above.  The Pune police issued orders in this regard last week.

Till now, head constables and assistant sub-inspectors too investigated such cases. The deputy commissioner of police (crime), Anant Rokade, told DNA that the decision was taken as officers in higher ranks can investigate such cases in a better way.

“We feel that such cases will be probed in a more scientific manner and the documentation will be precise. It will definitely help the police in improving the conviction rate in the city,” he added.

The deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Manoj Patil, welcomed the decision. “This is a prudent step. It would definitely help reduce fatal accidents in the city. It may not give immediate results, but would be a long-term one. The conviction rate will certainly go up in such cases,” Patil added.
