The next time you are pulled up by a traffic policeman in spite of not violating any traffic rules, you might want to check the officer’s credentials as many people have been taken for a ride by fake uniformed traffic cops.

Girish Sahu, 30, was recently robbed of his car by a uniformed traffic policeman. “I could never have imagined that he could be a fake cop. But there he was, driving off in my car, while I stood on the road bending on the dash boards to look for my papers,” Sahu told DNA.

A specification consultant with a construction company Sahu, while driving back in his company-owned car from Sanpada to Mulund on Wednesday, was stopped on the Airoli Bridge by a man dressed in a traffic police’s uniform. Riding on a black Splendor (MH-25-BQ-91), the man asked Sahu for the papers of his Indica car. The fake policemen accused him of talking on the phone.

“I was taken aback because I was not on the phone. In fact, I showed him my call records as proof and said that the last call I had made was at 6pm while it was 6.20pm when he stopped me. But he remained adamant,” recollected Sahu.

Sahu got off his car to go to the other side of the car to look for the car papers in the dashboard. While he opened the opposite door he flung his keys on the car’s seat to check the papers. Within seconds, the policeman took his keys, got in to the driver’s seat and drove off with the car.

This is the fifth incident of its kind in recent times and the police are alarmed too. The Rabale police started the investigation by seizing the culprit’s bike and lodging a first information report.
