A 24-year-old management student driving under the influence of alcohol ran over two pedestrians who were declared dead on arrival at hospital late on Sunday night in Marol. Lalit Sharma was returning home from a party at a friend’s place in Sher-e-Punjab colony around 12.20am when he lost control of the Maruti Swift (MH-02 BJ 537) on the Vijay Nagar bridge and knocked down friends Imlal Khanal, 45, and Been Bahadur Chatri, 50, who were walking towards Sainath Nagar.

Chatri, kitchen staff at a five-star hotel, fell off the bridge while Khanal, who ran a Chinese food stall in Marol, collapsed on the spot. They were taken to SevenHills hospital, but were declared dead on arrival.

“The preliminary report has confirmed that Sharma was under the influence of alcohol,” said Suresh Hujband, senior inspector at the MIDC police station.

A resident of Raj Paradise building in Marol, Sharma is employed with a courier firm and is pursuing his MBA. He has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and remanded in police custody till Wednesday.

His family has abandoned him after the accident, but his friends stood by him. “His father was too upset to come to court. He wants his son to face the consequences of his mistake,” a source said. However, Sharma’s friend who did not wish to be named said he never drives when he is drunk. “This was the first time. It was his bad luck as well as those of the victims,” he said.

Defence lawyer Pradeep Shetty argued in court that Sharma should have been booked under section 304(A) of the IPC – culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The magistrate said the section could not be modified at this stage and could be revised only at the time of trial.
