The Dindoshi sessions court witnessed arguments for and against the bail application of the brother-in-law and the sister-in-law of Deepti Chauhan, who jumped to death after throwing her five-year-old son, Siddesh, from the terrace of a seven-storey building in Dahisar last month. While the defence attributed Chauhan’s suicide to the copycat syndrome, the prosecution blamed her in-laws for her death. The court eventually rejected their bail application.

“We took strong objection to defense lawyer Ashok Saraogi’s argument that it has become a habit for women to jump off to death with their kids these days. We maintained that Deepti was disturbed with her in-laws taunts. We also have her sister’s statement in which she recollected that Deepti had met her on April 14, 2011 and had spoken at length about these arguments,” said inspector GS Randive, investigating officer.

The prosecution stressed on the apathy of Chauhan’s in-laws and told the court that the fact that Chauhan possibly felt helpless that if Siddhesh was left alone after her death he may have to bear the consequences of the allegations of him being illegitimate and added that the fact that she covered his eyes before her drastic leap displays that minimising his fear was her priority.
