Every Puneite gets fascinated with the idea of bringing Lord Ganesh to their homes.

But there are few dedicated ones who come with a unique and fascinating theme every year to welcome the Vighnaharta.

Renu Mulay, 15-year-old, class XI commerce student of the Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce has unique creative instincts, which enable her to come out with extraordinary themes every year. This time it is against corruption.

“This is my 12th year of Ganpati decorations. I started helping my sister Apoorva in decorations when I was just two-and-half years old. But since the time she has shifted to the UK, I started doing decorations on my own,’’ Renu said.

The best part of Renu’s decorations is the extensive
use of eco-friendly material to make decorations and has won several prizes for them. Usually, she starts thinking of a theme a week or two in advance. “This year, after witnessing the campaign against corruption, I decided that it was my theme. I have displayed a map of India with placards of the top 10 corrupt politicians. I have also displayed a Swiss bank where all the Indian money is going alongside Ganesh’s idol who is happy to see the unity, non-violence and dedication shown by the masses for the fight against corruption. I think the power of Lord Ganesh will bring all the money from Swiss bank back to India,’’ said Renu.

Renu’s earlier themes have been on terrorism, swine flu, pollution control, save mother earth and she makes it a point to use eco-friendly materials like flowers, leaves and paper every time. Renu’s mother Ragini has been her biggest inspiration. “My mother makes sure I read as many newspapers as possible to keep myself updated and bring them into picture,’’ Renu said.

On the other hand, Satish Ghatpande, an artist from Pune, has come up with a 3D aspect of Ganesh this year. “Through his umpteen manifestations, Ganesh reigns supreme over our hearts and minds. Lord Ganesh is so open to interpretation, that every artist has felt a divine obligation to bring forth his own vision of the Lord,’’ Ghatpande said.

This year, Ghatpande has come up with a theme ‘Swar Ganesh’ where he has portrayed Lord Ganesh on canvas playing various instruments. “I have given a 3D effect to these images by using
paper. I feel when a chord strikes the heart or a beat lightens the mood, the divinity is apparent. For me, he is the one who creates the true sound of music. Hence, I thought of depicting a musical theme this time,’’ Satish Ghatpande said.

Sushma Zore, a resident of Narayan Peth along with her husband Vidyadhar, has been installing Ganesh idols at her home for 20 years. This year, Sushma has depicted ‘Mayurban’ as a theme, where she has installed two attractive peacocks and has decorated the entire set using 600 peacock feathers.

“We have been working on this decoration for a month. We bought two thermocol peacocks and have decorated it with peacock feathers. We bought cotton garlands especially from Kolhapur to decorate Goddess Gauri,’’ Sushma said.
