A daylong strike at theatres and film studios across the country along with a protest march in Delhi are being proposed in the first week of January. Industry sources said if the government fails to address the producers’ grievances, they may even consider going on an indefinite strike.
“We have made several representations to the government to consider our demand to roll back the amendment proposal. As the matter has still not been sorted, we have decided to step up our protest,” said TP Aggarwal, president of the Film Federation of India.
He added that the final decision will be taken at a meeting of film associations on December 29 in Mumbai.
“It is unfortunate that the government is supporting a populist agenda at the behest of some influential lyricists,” said Mukesh Bhatt, vice-president of the Film and Television Producers Guild of India. Bhatt was referring to Javed Akhtar who has come under fire for lobbying for the rights of fellow lyricists and music composers.
“The copyright law, which seeks a share in the profits for the creative team, exists in film industries worldwide. So why are our producers opposing it?” said lyricist Sameer.
Recently, a Parliamentary Standing Committee made recommendations on the proposed Copyright Amendment Bill, 2010 which said that producers should share profits obtained from music rights with lyricists and composers.
