A woman who was shifting cities from Delhi to Mumbai had to bear the stress of not having her household goods arrive on time. And when they did arrive over a month late, they were in a damaged condition.

Bandra consumer forum president JL Despande with members VG Joshi and DS Bidnurkar on December 15 ordered the transport agency to compensate the lady by paying Rs50,000 for the stress she underwent and an additional Rs5,000 for the legal costs.

The complainant, Alka Bhardwaj, who worked as a principal director of audit in Delhi, was transferred to Mumbai in 2007.
She hired a local transport agency, Caravan Roadways Ltd, to transfer her household articles from Delhi to her Mumbai residence in Bandra-Kurla complex on November 25, 2007. As decided, she paid an advance of Rs14,000 and had agreed to pay up Rs13,000 after the goods arrived the next day.

Bharadwaj arrived in Mumbai with her family only to realise that her household articles had not yet arrived. She made frantic phone calls to the travel company but to no avail. The articles did not arrive for over a month. She said that she had to stay with her family members in a guest house.

Finally, she registered a complaint with the Mumbai police headquarters on January 1, 2008 after which the goods arrived the next day. But her troubles were far from over. Bharadwaj alleged that her computer, gas burner, refrigerator and some other items were damaged and she had to purchase a laptop, a refrigerator and a gas burner again. As proof, she got a certificate from a computer dealer that her hard disk drive, cabinet and mother board of the computer were damaged.

The travel company defended itself and said that Bharadwaj did not pay up the balance of Rs13,000 and filed a false complaint to avoid payment.
