The Congress paid a price for industries minister Narayan Rane’s supporters going on the rampage in Vengurla a week ago.
It lost almost all the seats in three municipal councils in Sindhudurg.

The party has lost the Vengurla council to Nationalist Congress Party.

All the parties had ganged up against the Congress after the violence in Vengurla by the Rane supporters ahead of the polls.
The parties opposing Rane had chalked out a plan after the violence and decided to support any non-Congress candidate.  Shiv Sena MLA Deepak Kesarkar had claimed that the workers from all parties were working against the Congress.

The opposition to the Congress was so intensified in Vengurla that it not only lost the council but also witnessed a debacle as it won only one seat. The violence helped Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to win the council by winning 12 seats. Two other council seats — Malvan and Sawantwadi — in Sidhudurg, where Narayan Rane enjoys his dominance also went to the NCP.

The debacle of Rane in Sindhudurg led to tension among people on Monday. “The tension is looming in the district and the administration will have to be on alert as anything can happen over the next couple of days,” said Rajan Chavan, a senior journalist from the district.

Like Rane, two other strong leaders, Ramdas Kadam of Shiv Sena and Bhaskar Jadhav of NCP, also have witnessed a setback. Khed municipal council, which was controlled by Shiv Sena, has been bagged by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, which has won nine out of 17 seats. Kadam hails from Khed.

Jadhav, who defied party orders and fielded his own candidates as Independents, could bag only five seats.
