The lakhs of commuters using the Kurla railway station often find themselves faced with what may be termed as a station in-the-making, or a poor resemblance of what a station is supposed to be. For, Kurla, a crucial station on both Central and Harbour local train networks, has become a hub of incomplete projects.

The station, which handles traffic on the Kasara, Karjat, Navi Mumbai routes, remains flooded by commuters 24X7. Local MP Priya Dutt has promised DNA all efforts from her side to improve and upgrade the station.

Stating that the north side of the station is more crucial, “as it is an important link to the Bandra-Kurla Complex in the west and suburbs like Chembur and Navi Mumbai to its east”, Jitendra Gupta, a member of Citizens Transport Committee and a resident of Kurla said, “The station needs  facilities like waiting room as commuters get stranded here after last train goes.”

“There are six machines for obtaining tickets from smart cards, but on and average only one or two function. Same is the case for coupon machines. No amount of complaints help,” LIC agent MZ Safdari  who wrote to DNA Fix-It.

“On the station’s east, there is complete chaos as the BMC bridge and the railway bridge criss-cross each other with encroachments between them, hardly leaving any space to walk. Platforms nine and ten have been abandoned and are used by beggars and railway protection force cops to extort money from newcomers arriving from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus,” said Gahalal Suranmal, a 30-year-old resident of the locality.

The station is a hub of incomplete projects. The east-west subway is stuck, platforms nine and ten have been abandoned awaiting revival, the east-west road over bridge is stuck and so are the footover railway bridges. Another bridge coming up near the level-crossing gate too is held up. There is a serious need to pay attention here,” Subhash Gupta, former member of National Railway Users’ Consultative Committee, said.

“Earlier,  around 5.30am you could find two ticket windows working but now only one functions, resulting in a long queue in early hours. Even coupons are not available during that time,” Gupta said.

MP Priya Dutt said she would do everything possible to get Kurla station back on track. “I will take the matter for the station’s improvement with the authorities for a complete makeover plan,” she said.
