Rare species of sharks, humongous groupers, colourful aberrant fishes and much more will be on extensive display soon in the city.

The decks are being set up to build a world-class marine aquarium on the lines of renowned underwater aquariums in Singapore and Dubai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sanctioned the plans for the aquarium in the budget estimates for the ensuing year.

The aquarium will be one of its kind in the country, replicating the aquatic life under sea. “The objective is to have a major tourist attraction in the city. This will provide the students a learning experience and will be an enthralling opportunity for every citizen,” said Rahul Shewale, standing committee chairman.

Officials claim the aquarium will be a state-of-art facility with over 100 species of fishes and coral life. “The idea is to display the ecosystems of mangroves, the beach and the vast oceans. This will be a discovery of the aquatic life, both of fresh water and marine,” said Shailendra Shirodkar, architect for the aquarium.

The aquarium will be a cyclic walk-through. It will be two-level aquarium of about 4-6 meters height. The fishes will be imported from coastal countries and the Indian Ocean. Moreover, other aquatic species like sea horses, turtles and algae will be on display. Also, a touch pond, where the visitors can touch the fishes, will be an added feature. The estimated cost for the project stands at Rs30 crore.

The makers are also contemplating to have a tunnel-shaped aquarium. With the built-up area of 25,000 sq mt, the aquarium will be one of the largest aquariums in the country. The aquarium will be located at Charni road and is slated to be functional by September 2012. “We will develop the aquarium in intervals so that whenever visitors come it will be new experience for them. The themes will be modulated to keep up the citizen’s interest,” Shirodkar added.
