The inauguration function of the ‘Matoshree Ramabai Bhimrao Ambedkar Udyan’ opposite Wadia College turned into a war of words between the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Monday evening.

Pune mayor Mohansingh Rajpal, who belongs to the NCP, severely criticised the Congress and accused it of a belligerent attitude. Congress leader Ramesh Bagwe immediately retorted by terming the NCP “unfaithful” and accused it of helping communal forces.

The function was attended by the deputy mayor Prasanna Jagtap, leader of the house in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Nilesh Nikam, and municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade.

It may be recalled that in the recent election to the standing committee chairman of the PMC, the NCP had supported the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate against that put up by the Congress.

In fact, the two parties were at each other’s throats in the run-up to the elections for the post of chairpersons of three committees of the civic body, with the NCP drawing blank every time.

The mayor told the Congress to stop fighting. “The Congress takes an adamant stand which benefits a third party. The Congress should adopt a cooperative approach,’’ Rajpal said.

According to the mayor, the NCP always kept a low profile and extended cooperation. “In the coming days, the two parties should maintain good communication and join hands for the sake of the city’s development,’’ he said.

Bagwe cited an Urdu couplet and said  the Congress was always progressive in its thinking. “Puneites will never forgive the NCP for supporting communal forces. The NCP has committed a great sin in the standing committee elections. Citizens will question the NCP in the civic polls to be held next year,’’ he said.
