The much debated Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) began its online trial testing on December 12. But those who took the test with a hope of understanding the new pattern were shocked to find only accounting questions from the quantitative section.

Last week, the All Indian Council for Technical Education (AICTE) had announced that the CMAT would replace the state-level entrance exam for management schools. But, growing confusion among students has forced the body to suspend the trial testing and work on a revised pattern, which will be put on trial testing from December 18 onwards.

A student, who has appeared for the Combined Admission Test (CAT) and is preparing to appear for the CMAT, was among those who took the trial test. “I was shocked to see the questions. The AICTE notification had clearly stated it would give equal importance to all sections - quantitative techniques, logical reasoning, language comprehension and general awareness. But the trial test took me and my friends by surprise when we saw questions only from the accounting section.”

Amol Kokate, assistant course developer for CAT and other management tests at TIME Coaching Centre, said, “We have put our work force to the task of finding details of the trial tests and the test as a whole, considering its newness. But, we are not considering the CMAT to be a test that will become popular with candidates who want to pursue management courses.”

An official from the AICTE said, “The trial test was not to give information on the testing patterns, but to introduce candidates to the computer-based, navigation process. The test shall resume from December 18.”

But, students and coaching centres call the exercise a waste of time.

“Navigation should not be a point of concern at all. Thanks to CAT and other management tests, candidates are familiar with computer-based testing patterns. As this test is new, candidates want to know the question paper pattern and the kind of questions that will be asked,” said a professional from a coaching centre.
