CM announces additional Rs20 crore for Shivaji University

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has announced additional funds of Rs20 crore to the Shivaji University (SU) on Friday in addition to the previous Rs50 crore grant announced to mark the golden jubilee year of the university.

Chavan was addressing the golden jubilee ceremony of the varsity on the campus on Friday. SU was founded on November 18, 1962, for Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Solapur and Ratnagiri, which was a bold decision by late chief minister Yashwantrao Chavan and the then education minister, Balasaheb Desai. Presently, the state varsity caters to Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara.

The SU golden jubilee year will be celebrated throughout the year. The government has already sanctioned Rs50 crore for the SU.

Chavan said Rs3 crore will be used for chair in the name of Desai whereas Rs10 crore and Rs7 crore will be used respectively for building convention centre and purchasing DNA sequencing machine.

“The SU should obtain at least Rs100 crore funds for research activities. The varsity should obtain a position in the top 500 universities of the world,” Chavan said. The CM said industries in India should support the varsities.

Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said the government immediately granted Rs50crore to the SU, which will be disbursed in three years time. “The plan for next 10 years should be workedout and joint efforts will be taken for obtaining funds from the union government,” he said.

Vice chancellor NJ Pawar spoke about the SU’s ‘glorious’ progress in the last 50 years. “The progress has been qualitative,” he said.

The state minister for higher and technical education DP Sawant said the state will enact Maharashtra Vocational Training Act for imparting vocation training.

“The departments of the computers, electronics and physical education, which started before 2000, will get funds after April 2012,” Sawant said.

Shrimant Shahu Chhatrapati Maharaj; co-operative minister, Hasan Mushrif; rural development minister, Jayant Patil; forest minister, Patangrao Kadam; co-operative minister, Harshvardhan Patil and state minister for home department, Satej Patil also  attended the ceremony.
