Class III staff of district court to strike work today in Pune

More than 750 Class III employees of the Pune district court, along with their counterparts in other parts of the state, will go on indefinite strike from Tuesday against the alleged lackadaisical
approach of the state government in executing the recommendations of Shetty Commission.

The strike call has been issued by Maharashtra Nyayalayin Karmachari Mahasangh.

The stir is likely to paralyse hearings in the court as the staff play a pivotal role in placing legal documents before the judge at the time of hearing and write notes during court proceedings.

According to Nyayalayin Karmachari Sanghatana (district court employees organisation), the Supreme Court had instituted the Shetty Commission for judges and court employees in 1996, following which the recommendations made by the commission started being implementing by the government only for judges since 2003.

But the state government is still dragging its feet when it comes to implementing the recommendations of the commission for Class III employees of all district courts in the state.

Speaking to DNA, president of the district court employees organisation, Rajendra Warkhade said, “The Supreme Court directed the state government on October 7, 2009, to start implementing the recommendations of the commission till October 7, 2010, but still no step has been taken by the state government.’’

On November 11 last year, the organisation had issued a call for a one-day token strike. The same day, the state government officials held talks with the Maharashtra Nyayalayin Karmachari Mahasangh and promised to implement the recommendations.
