The only way to free  the country from corruption is for citizens to take an oath to never bribe any public servant, observed the Bombay high court. “The people of the country should take the oath that they will not give even Re1 as bribe. At least one day in a week should be declared as corruption free day,” said justice PB Majmudar.

A division bench of justice Majmudar and justice RD Dhanuka was hearing a public interest litigation filed by social activist Samir Zaveri alleging that certain Railway Protection Force (RPF) officers were releasing persons booked for trespassing and crossing railway tracks on fake cash bail bonds.

The court was informed on Saturday by the RPF that they have suspended 21 of their officers, including a police inspector who was allegedly involved in the fake bail bond scam. Justice Majmudar remarked that the RPF and the CBI should take action against senior officers as well. “Even in cases of custodial deaths, only constables are suspended. They are not the only culprits,” observed justice Majmudar.

Suresh Kumar, advocate for the railways, said that they have suspended one police inspector, one police sub inspector, three assistant sub inspectors, four head constables and nine constables. Also, a departmental inquiry has been initiated against them, said Kumar.

Rajiv Singh, advocate for Zaveri, pointed out to the court that the CBI is probing the case against 20 RPF personnel. “The RPF itself has initiated departmental inquiry against 28 persons. They should inform the CBI about the eight additional names so that the central agency could probe them as well,” said Singh.
