A 40-year-old woman from the Mukundnagar slums in Swargate area threw four children into a canal in an attempt to kill them.

While three of them — Rohit Shankar Mizar (9), his brother Rahul (8) and cousin Anmol Puran Mizar (5) — managed to survive, the fourth, Tejas Raju Sonar (3), is feared drowned.

The incident took place late on Thursday night. The police and fire brigade are still scouring the canal to search for the child’s body.

The grandmother of the children, Nanda Rajsingh Mizar (50), lodged a first information report (FIR) at Swargate police station against her neigbhour, Sangita Vilas Kivde (40), a resident of Mukundnagar.

The police arrested Sangita late in the night for kidnapping and attempted murder. On Friday, she was produced before the judicial magistrate (first class), Umeshchandra More, who remanded her in police custody till Monday.

According to the police, the suspect is a moneylender. Nanda had taken a loan from her, but failed to repay it. This seems to be the motive for the crime.

The children were fond of Sangita. On Thursday at 7 pm, she asked all four of them to accompany her to a nearby place to have ice cream. The family was not aware of this.

According to the police, Sangita and her daughter Surekha allegedly took the children to Dias Plot in Gultekdi in an autorickshaw. Sangita started throwing the children one by one into the water. Her daughter reportedly tried to stop her.

When she tried to throw Anmol, he bit Sangita on the hand, fled and raised an alarm. A few women rushed to the spot and rescued the two children from the water. There was no trace of Tejas. The women nabbed Sangita, thrashed her and handed her over to the police.

Anmol told DNA that Sangita took them to the canal in an autorickshaw on the pretext of showing them fish. “After throwing Rohit first, she started laughing and clapping. I pleaded with her, but when she tried to hold me forcefully, I bit her and fled,” he recalled.

Inspector in-charge of Swargate police station, Rajkumar Gaikwad, said Sangita claimed that she had lent Rs1 lakh to the complainant, which she was not returning.
