Dr Kishore Harugoli, in-charge of the polio vaccination drive in BMC said, “We have trained the college students on everything related to polio. They give us the much needed manpower to conduct the campaign.”
Talking about the polio drive and the corporation’s action plan, Dr Harugoli further added, “We are going with the census data which is more authentic. With less households, we have reduced the teams from 4500 (last drive) to 3790 for this drive.”
The Sunday polio drive saw a slide in turnout with only 57.58% of the city’s children under five years taking the oral vaccine. “Being a vacation period, we always face a problem as people go out of station. Hopefully, we will meet the targets with the door- to -door program,” added Dr Harugoli.
Meanwhile, BMC has also put its acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance program on a fast track with more than 100 children being checked every week. The corporation has doubled its reporting and informers’ team for its ongoing AFP surveillance program in last few months as AFP could be a precursor to polio as per the National polio surveillance Project survey, 2006.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) also considers it as an indicator of the presence of polio virus. The city has not seen any polio cases since 2008. The corporation has identified high risk wards in the city for it AFP surveillance.
