Canine waste on footpaths is an eyesore for Mumbaikars. To make Mumbai streets free of pet waste, a Bandra corporator has come up with a brilliant idea of installing bins for collecting dog excreta in the city.
Raising the issue at the BMC’s standing committee meeting on Wednesday, Congress corporator Asif Zakaria said he made the recommendation after he received complaints regarding this from Bandra residents.
“While pursuing the grievances of public about pet waste, I tried to tackle the problem in different ways during my previous term. But, somehow things did not work out. Hence, I suggested the civic body to install dog waste bins, which are found in western countries,” Zakaria said.
The dog waste bins can be fixed to a poll. “The civic body is planning to install 20,000 garbage bins. So, it can put some dog waste bins too. To begin with, the corporation can install some bins in Bandra and accordingly, decision can be taken for rest of the city,” the corporator from ward number 95(H-West) said.
A senior civic official said the suggestion is a welcome one.
“Similar concept is used in the US. We will see how it can be implemented in the city,” he added.
